Request access to new Yahoo Sponsored Search

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Yahoo! has announced the availability of their new Sponsored Search program to select advertisers. It is being rolled out to advertisers in stages, and you can either wait for them to get to your account, or you can request an early upgrade.

We have yet to take the new system for a test drive, but check back for first impressions when we do.

Yahoo Sponsored Search reporting problems

Monday, October 16th, 2006

Several months ago we blogged on reporting errors encountered at Yahoo Sponsored Search. These issues were never resolved, and we continue to run into others. We are particularly frustrated by the fact that location-based campaigns do not produce reports that break out cost and performance for each location. Really. We have contacted Yahoo support about this and been told to wait until the update.

Search Engine Market Share

Monday, October 16th, 2006

Search Engine Watch recently published some interesting search engine market share numbers from comScore Media Metrix’ qSearch service. The pie chart shows market share be search network, meaning that it combines properties owned by the listed vendors so that “Yahoo.com” includes various web properties like Yahoo Sports (to use the article’s own example).

Clearly Google is the 10,000 lb. gorilla, especially if you add in AOL’s powered-by-Google share. More interesting than the snapshot is the later chart of market share over time which should discourage everyone but Google.

These results should be taken with a grain of salt for quantitative assessments, but qualitatively they are quite useful. In particular, which engine should you advertise on first (all other things being equal)? Google.
