Changes at BlogRush and abuse problems
We introduced BlogRush in a previous post, and now they have disclosed the source of some intermittent availability problems. In addition to hardware failures at their ISP, they have run into problems of abuse. I suspect (hope?) they had some ideas about how their system could be manipulated early on; even if they didn’t they sure appear to be now. We noticed ourselves that the system was counting multiple views by the same users in their points accrual system as we were trying to setup the (very helpful) filter features. There also have been many poor quality sites submitted and even created specifically to take advantage of the service, so they are reviewing all past and future submissions by hand to make sure that participating blogs provide useful information.
While these are unfortunate challenges/events, they are not atypical growing pains for new social technologies, and we still think that participating is worthwhile.
