Google Zeitgeist 2007
Google recently released their 2007 edition of Zeitgeist, an assessment of popular search terms and trends for the year. While this has little actual utility for most organizations, it is entertaining.
Among our observations of their observations:
- Searches spiked for several notable events, including Anne Nicole Smith’s death, the Virginia Tech shooting, nude photos of Vaness Hudgens (who?), Radiohead’s new album release, and the passing of Luciano Pavarotti. Oh, and Don Imus was momentarily as popular among searchers as the iPhone.
- Among the biggest search gainers were the iPhone, Webkinz, Club Penguin, and — sadly — TMZ.
- Biggest losers included Xanga, Kazaa, sudoku, and Mozart. There goes civilization.
- If the elections were based upon search queries, Ron Paul would be running away with it all. Fred Thompson would also still be in it, so this is clearly not indicative of anything.
- American Idol is more popular globally than at home, as is Britney Spears. We can be proud of our exports.
- If you liked Borat, used Vonage, or took Paxil, you may have been one of those most interested in lawsuits.
- Popular death rumors plagued (pun intended) Travis Barker, Bob Barker (no relation?), Vince McMahon, Fidel Castro, and Michael Jackson.
- Lindsay Lohan gets no respect next to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.
- The US has yet to embrace Manchester United. They play soccer.
- The top movie title searches have nothing to do with quality.
- The shortage of Nintendo Wii platforms has generated a lot more search engine use, whether or not the shortage was planned.
- And last of all, more people appear to know how to draw and crochet than to kiss.
